The Barbour Jacket Buying Guide

Barbour has gained a deserved reputation for its high-performance outerwear, and its quilted and waxed-cotton jackets have become a perennial favorite for many. Demonstrating the best in British craftsmanship, the family-run company’s wide selection of jackets is designed to protect against the elements in style. Look out for iconic pieces like the Beadnell, Seaview and Liddesdale, which will see you through many seasons to come. Read on for our women’s Barbour jacket buying guide, to help you pick the right style and work out the size that fits you best.

Dating back to 1897, Barbour is a quintessentially British brand that still manufactures classic wax jackets such as the Beadnell by hand in their factory in north east England. Loved by everyone from the Queen to Alexa Chung, the parkas, quilted jackets and wax jackets look just at home at festivals, days out in the country and on cool girls in the city.

The Most Wanted Barbour Jackets

  • Barbour’s Beadnell Wax Jacket

Reworking the classic Bedale design with a flattering, feminine silhouette, Barbour’s Beadnell Wax Jacket comes with a corduroy collar and a signature tartan lining. Made from Thornproof medium-weight 6oz waxed cotton, the Beadnell features moleskin-lined handwarmer pockets and lower studded bellows pockets to keep essentials within easy reach. Available in a range of colors, there is also the option to add a hood and zip-in liners.

  • Barbour’s Shoreward Quilted Jackets

Ideal for between-seasons dressing, the Barbour Shoreward Quilted Jacket will help you tackle inclement weather with ease. The quilted design is complemented with a two-way zip fastening, curved side seams with hidden stud pockets and a funnel collar. A Beacon logo discreetly accents the left sleeve.

  • Barbour’s Subtropic Waterproof Jackets

With a longer length and practical hood, the Barbour Subtropic Waterproof Jacket will shield you from the rain. The cotton lining is enlivened with a flash of tartan, while the curved hem and drawcord waist ensures a modern look. The Subtropic jacket is finished with a zip fastening with studded storm flap and tonal logo embroidery at the pocket.

The Barbour Jacket Sizing Guide

Barbour women’s jackets use UK sizing, and range from size 6 to 18. Use the chart below to convert Barbour’s sizing into other standard sizing systems.

For example, if you usually take a US size 4 or an Italian (same as European) size 40, then you should buy your women’s Barbour jacket in a UK 8.

Barbour jackets come in either a slim, regular or relaxed fit:

Slim Fit: This is designed to flatter with a sleek, figure-hugging cut

Regular Fit: Designed to suit everyone, this fit is versatile and comfortably allows ease of movement.

Relaxed Fit: The brand’s most generous fit, it is roomy enough for layering underneath

How To Care For Your Barbour Jacket

To help prolong the life of your Barbour jacket, we always recommend following the instructions found on the care label that is usually located within the inside pockets of the brand’s coats and jackets.

Barbour advises that you should not put your waxed-cotton jacket in the washing machine, and that it should be sponge cleaned instead. Avoid dry cleaning as the chemical process used may remove proofing or permanently damage the jacket’s finish.

Quilted jackets should be washed separately and put in the tumble dryer with dryer balls.

Barbour waterproof breathable jackets can be machine or hand washed at 30 degrees. Do not use fabric softeners as these can affect the durable water-repellent finish.

FAQ

Which Barbour jackets are the warmest?

When it comes to choosing a winter jacket, it pays to invest in the best. Barbour’s Cavalry Polarquilt Jacket combines a diamond-quilted outer and cozy fleece lining for exceptional warmth. Other quilted designs like the Freya and Rebecca are perfect when the temperature drops.

When should I re-wax my Barbour jacket?

Barbour recommends re-waxing your jacket every year to ensure it retains its wax quality. To re-wax your jacket, follow the tips below:

Clean your jacket first with cold water and a sponge

Place a tin of Barbour’s Wax Thornproof dressing in hot water to soften for around 20 minutes

Once the wax has melted, work into your jacket. Be careful not to get wax on the jacket lining, inside the pockets or on the corduroy collar

Remove any excess wax

Use a hair dryer to dry and to spread the wax evenly

Hang up and leave to dry overnight

Are Barbour waxed jackets water resistant?

Barbour has been using waxed cotton in its products since 1894, and the material has been refined over the years to create the unique wax cotton that the brand is synonymous with today. There are various wax finishes and weights available, yet you can expect all Barbour waxed jackets to resist water on rainy days.
